Hidden Figures

On August 25th, 2024, the GlobalWE movie club celebrated its 15th movie discussion related to 2017 film, Hidden Figures.

The screenings and discussions have long been a way for us to come together and virtually connect as we discuss shared understandings of movies focused on women and their empowerment. We discussed the challenges the women in the film faced, their allies and the way they persevered in spite of tremendous obstacles.

The movie brought to light the intertwining of racial justice and gender equality in our past and reminded the viewer of the current and daily struggles of women. The three women in this story serve as beacons of light and remind us about the grit, perseverance, and resilience required to continue to make strides forward in the path toward racial justice.

Here is what one of our attendees had to say:

“Hidden Figures was produced with humor, but at the same time, highlighted the difficulties and discrimination that women faced (face) in the workplace.  These three women had exceptional abilities and were able to contribute significantly to advancing NASA’s mission, yet the bureaucratic system and organization’s (and society’s) culture inhibited them in many ways.  Even so, the women continued to contribute to NASA's (and the country’s) mission with their conscientious hard work, dedication, and perseverance.  The film showed that they were eventually able to win support from key players within the system (their director and John Glenn) who were willing to go to bat to help change things. My experience with the GlobalWe movie discussions is very positive; its format and organizers are fully supportive in encouraging participation and input from every participant. I find it a good social experience as well.

On Sunday, August 25, join Harvard GlobalWE to discuss the next edition of our movie club: Hidden Figures, a 2016 American biographical drama film directed by Theodore Melfi and written by Melfi and Allison Schroeder. It is loosely based on the 2016 non-fiction book of the same name by Margot Lee Shetterly about three female African-American mathematicians: Katherine Goble Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer), and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe), who worked at NASA during the Space Race. Other stars include Kevin Costner, Kirsten Dunst, Jim Parsons, Mahershala Ali, Aldis Hodge, and Glen Powell.

Every quarter, GlobalWE announces a new film that is widely available on major streaming platforms. We ask that you watch the film at your leisure from the comfort of your home and then join us online for a lively discussion. In our virtual gathering, we will discuss the film, raise questions, and advance the mission of GlobalWE: the empowerment of women through education, dialogue, and connection among individuals working for women's rights and freedoms worldwide.
