Harvard Alumni for Global Women's Empowerment

Join Harvard GlobalWE Connect for the third event in its Women's Empowerment Fireside Chat series featuring CAMFED USA and its Executive Director, Brooke Hutchinson. 

Launched in 2021, the Fireside Chat series features dialogues with senior leaders of organizations serving women and girls worldwide and the challenges and opportunities they encounter in a rapidly-changing world. 
 

The event will be held via Zoom on Saturday, June 25th at 12 pm ET.

Since its founding in 1993, CAMFED catalyzes the power of the most vulnerable girls and young women to create the future they imagine: for themselves, for their communities, and for Africa. CAMFED USA’s office was established in 2006. 
 

CAMFED is a pan-African movement, revolutionizing how girls’ education is delivered. Through a gold-standard system of accountability to the young people and communities weserve, we have created a model that radically improves girls’ prospects of becoming independent, influential women. Our impact increases exponentially through the association of young women educated with CAMFED’s support. Together, we multiply the number of girls in school, and accelerate their transition to secure livelihoods and leadership.  Through the CAMFED Association, women are leading action on the big challenges their countries face - from child marriage, and girls’ exclusion from education, to climate change. This unique pan-African network of teachers, nurses, doctors, sustainable agriculture experts and entrepreneurs numbered nearly 208,000 by the beginning of 2022, and is growing every year as more girls complete school and join them. By the end of 2021, our collective efforts had already supported more than 5.5 million children to go to school across Ghana, Malawi, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, and millions more students have benefited from an improved educational environment across our partner schools.

GlobalWE Connect is an initiative that connects Harvard University alumni with organizations leading the way globally for women’s empowerment in the arts, social services, education, health, economic development, entrepreneurship, policy, STEM, and other fields. GlobalWE Connect provides a forum for discussion with these organizations and hosts a Women’s Empowerment Expo, which enables these organizations to engage with Harvard University alumni and students as well as professors, staff, and other members of the Harvard University community who seek internship, volunteer, mentorship, career exploration, and charitable giving opportunities.

Meet our Speaker

Brooke Hutchinson

Executive Director, CAMFED USA
 

Brooke joined CAMFED (the Campaign for Female Education) in July 2004, and went on to establish CAMFED USA’s office in San Francisco in 2006, where she serves as Executive Director. She was motivated to work in the field of girls’ education after studying in Kenya and conducting research on child growth stunting in the Gambia, witnessing first-hand the direct impact of mothers’ education levels on child and family health. Brooke holds a BA in Anthropology and Biology from the University of Colorado and an MPhil in Biological Anthropology from the University of Cambridge. 
 

Meet our Moderator
Wendy P. Barreno
Strategic Advisor 

Wendy is an advocate for inclusion and social impact with experience across government, nonprofits, social service research, philanthropy, and the private sector. She has worked with a variety of organizations in education, health care, justice, housing, and workforce development both in the U.S. and internationally, including the Worker Education and Resource Center, Lab for Economic Opportunities, Results for America, I Have a Dream Foundation L.A., and Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council in UNOPS. At the Arnold Foundation, Wendy developed a new portfolio in evidence-based policy totaling over $40M to minimize injustice, reduce poverty, and maximize opportunity. Wendy also served as Chief of Staff to an elected member of the Board of Education in the nation’s second largest school district, where priorities included personalizing education through smaller learning communities, building new schools, and renovating public school libraries and playgrounds. As an undergraduate, Wendy wrote her honors thesis on patient-centered maternity care and continues to advocate for the inclusion of historically disenfranchised voices, including women, people of color, and people experiencing poverty, in program design and public policy. Wendy holds a Bachelor's degree from Harvard University and a Master in Public Policy from the Harvard Kennedy School, where she was the Scott & Isabelle Black Fellow and awarded the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy Paper Prize.
