Harvard GlobalWE PRESENTS

A Conversation with Jacqueline Saper on her memoir
From Miniskirt to Hijab: A Girl in Revolutionary Iran

Saturday, September  26, 2020 | 12:00-1:00 pm ET | Virtual Zoom Event

This event took place on September 26th, 2020. Registration is no longer open.

Harvard GlobalWE is excited to bring our members this exclusive, online event with author Jacqueline Saper. Jacqueline will read an excerpt from her memoir "From Miniskirt to Hijab: A Girl in Revolutionary Iran" during the program, followed by an interview moderated by Harvard GlobalWE's Program Chair Aarti Gupta.

From the author:

"Jacqueline Saper, named after Jacqueline Kennedy, was born in Tehran in a Jewish family to Iranian and British parents.

Her comfortable childhood and adolescence in Iran ended in 1978, as the country convulsed with civil unrest and social clashes. In 1979, came a revolution. The shah was ousted, and Ayatollah Khomeini returned from exile. Iran was now an Islamic theocracy. Jacqueline continued to live in the Islamic Republic under restrictive rules, especially towards women. She eventually fled to the United States in 1987 with her husband and two children after, in part, witnessing her six-year-old daughter’s indoctrination into radical Islamic politics at school. At the heart of Saper’s story is a harrowing and instructive tale of how extremist ideologies seized a Westernized, affluent country and transformed it into a fundamentalist Islamic society.

Jacqueline is a writer, commentator, public speaker, analyst, and translator. She speaks on the Middle East and human rights subject matter and has appeared on American television and radio shows. Her memoir, From Miniskirt to Hijab: A Girl in Revolutionary Iran is a finalist for the 2020 Clara Johnson Award for Women's Literature. Her opinion columns and essays and book reviews appear in national and international publications. Selected by Left Brain/Right Brain productions, Saper subtitled and translated the Alex and Ali movie, which won the Frameline39 Jury Award for Outstanding film. Jacqueline studied business and earned the CPA designation."
